Trees & Triangles By the Jar: Christmas Trees Custom Made Out of Baby Food Jars!
By Sue L., Retired Dart Network Employee
On a cold winter morning, I walked into the reception area of Dart Transit Company where I worked, and that's where I first spotted it. The sparkly warmth of that Christmas tree displayed on the credenza was a bright spot in my morning. I just had to see this beautiful tree up close! As I examined the construction, I was amazed to see that it was made from ordinary baby food jars! I have never forgotten the image and how it inspired my creativity. Little did I know at that moment that making beautiful Christmas trees would become such a big part of my life!
A new mother, who had plenty of baby food jars on hand, asked me to make the first tree for her! A co-worker – after seeing the completed tree – said to me, "Sue, you should make these and sell them.” To get me started, that co-worker went to Des Moines, Iowa, to visit family and went to a Freecycle Center that had baby food jars and rattled all the way home to Minnesota with three crates of them.
After receiving all the jars, I realized I would need a venue to sell my Christmas trees. I decided to participate in a craft fair at the Minnesota Masonic Home. Little did I realize the impact it would have on me and the residents. Due to the possible fire hazard, residents were unable to have lighted Christmas trees in their rooms. My little Christmas trees with mini Christmas lights were the perfect solution because they don't produce heat. When a resident's daughter spotted my trees, she showed her mother and her mother loved them! After picking out her special tree, I had the privilege pf placing it in her room. When I plugged it in, tears rolled down her cheeks and mine! I knew I had made the right decision to make these trees. It is very fulfilling to create something with my hands that can bring so much joy to others.
Since my humble beginnings, I have displayed many variations of my original Christmas tree for sale at over 250 craft fairs in the last ten years. I create these trees with my hands and my heart to bring joy and pleasure to others.
These trees are perfect for a truck driver to add to their truck – it brings the Christmas spirit to wherever the road takes you!
Due to the fact that I am using recycled baby food jars it's an environmentally-friendly product. I have expanded my product line to include fleece pillowcases and scarves. Sports themes have been very popular with all 3 products. I especially enjoy creating custom orders that are special and unique for family and friends of my customers.
Please contact me if you want to purchase any of these products. The Christmas rush starts early at my house!
